I worked from September 2022 to February 2025 to create a series of 13 staged self-portraits depicting the situations encountered by those living with dementia, either personally or as a caregiver of a loved one.
Each portrait from start to finish required several weeks of planning, acquiring props, costuming, setting up the shoot, photographing myself with a camera remote or an assistant, and then post-production in Photoshop to composite all the parts onto the background, tweaking colors, and adding lights and shadows.
All in my spare time because I have a full-time job that actually pays.
I wanted to create a zine that could be used as a teaching tool or a resource for caregivers. On one side is a full-color portrait, and facing it is a page I wrote explaining the story depicted and offering advice and resources for caregivers who may find themselves in this situation, wondering what to do.
Back in 2012-2014, my sisters and I could have used a tool such as this when taking care of our mother. Like most caregivers, we were on duty 24/7 and unpaid. We scrambled to figure out how to do this on our own, how do we split up the duties, how do we best treat her with love and compassion when she is frightened or repeating herself again and again. We could have used some tips, advice, support and resources.
